MICROSOFT LOOKS TO SPRUCE UP IMAGE: NEW YORK - Microsoft, struggling to spruce up its image, is scaling back some of its most criticized practices as it ponders a new public relations campaign. The software giant is ending controversial provisions in agreements with its Internet content providers that prohibited the providers from promoting rivals' products. Those alleged exclusionary provisions are one area that the Justice Department is investigating in its antitrust suit against Microsoft. The company also says it may try to drum up public support by urging sympathetic software customers and its own staff to contact the press in a public relations blitz.
