A $57 billion megamerger of NationsBank and BankAmerica, creating 
the largest bank in the United States, has won final regulatory 
approval from the Federal Reserve Board. The merger vaults the combined
bank ahead of the nation's two largest: Citicorp and Chase Manhattan. 
With 4,800 branch offices in 27 states and assets of $580 billion, it 
will become the largest bank in the United States and the third largest
in the world.
