★ 便利なひとくち表現-cold
・風邪という意味での cold は 前回とりあげました。
風邪をひく（風邪にかかる）は catch a cold で、
風邪をひいている は have a cold でした。
・寒い、冷たい、は cold ですが
・cold には「よそよそしい」「冷淡な」という意味もあります。
She is so cold. 彼女はとてもよそよそしい。
・cut a person cold は 「知ってる人に知らない振りをする。」
・pour cold water on または throw cold water on
これらを直訳すると 「冷水を注ぐ」、 「冷水をなげる」 という意味ですか
ら、
「に水をさす」「の難点をつく」という熟語です。
日本語の ニュアンスと似ていますね。
例えば、
She loves to pour cold water on everything.
(彼女は何事にもけちをつけたがる)
・the cold shoulder は 「すげない扱い」です。
give a person the cold shoulder 人によそよそしい態度をとる。
get the cold shoulder そっけなく扱われる。

☆ １１月１１日は数字の同じ数字が４つ並ぶ珍しい日ですね。
アメリカでは Veterans Day （復員軍人の日）で第１次・第２次世界大戦の
終戦を記念する法定休日。
以前は Armistice Day と呼ばれていました。
(armistice : 休戦、停戦）
・ Veterans' Day (November 11)
November 11, 1919, was set aside as "Armistice Day" in the United States,
to remember the sacrifices that men and women made during World War I
in order to ensure a lasting peace.
On Armistice Day, soldiers who survived the war marched in a parade through
their hometowns.
Politicians and veteran officers gave speeches and held ceremonies of thanks
for the peace they had won.
After World War II and the Vietnam War, this remembrance day was renamed
Veteran's Day.
Over the 20th century, veterans of military service have organized
support groups such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
On Veterans' Day and Memorial Day, these groups raise funds for their
charitable activities by selling paper poppies made by disabled veterans.
This bright red wildflower became a symbol of World War I after a bloody battle
in a field of poppies called Flanders Field in Belgium.
