☆先日のアメリカの宝くじ、日本でも報道されていましたね。
390億円の当たりがでて２人が当選しました。
一括して貰うと半額になるそうですがそれでも一人あたり約１００億円。
☆100ドルで2ドルのホットドッグを買って残りの９８ﾄﾞﾙで宝くじを買った
プール修理屋さんが幸運を射止めました。
仕事はやめるそうです。(もっともな話ですね)
☆ミシガン州では当選くじを売った店が１％貰えるシステムになっている
そうでこのプール修理屋さんが買った店は約２億円もらえます。
(ミシガン州で宝くじ売ろうかなー)

★「おいしい」と言うのにいろいろな表現がありますが今回はそれ
についてFranca 先生からの説明です。
以下の説明で言ってることは
This is tasty! This tastes great!
This is delicious! This tastes delicious!
This is good! This tastes good!
This is yummy!
これらはおいしい食べ物や飲み物について言う時に使います。
・This is sweet! は甘いと言う意味なので“おいしい”ではありません。
・This is good! は(もちろん)食べ物や飲み物以外にも使います。
・This is yummy! は子供言葉であって大人は使いません。

1. This is tasty! (common American phrase) = This tastes great!
This phrase is used when referring to good tasting food or drink.
Phil: This is tasty! You're a great cook.
Marisa: Thanks, Phil! I'm really glad you like my cooking.
2. This is delicious! (common American phrase)
= This tastes delicious!
This phrase is the same meaning as "This is tasty!".
Phil: This is delicious! You're an excellent cook.
Marisa: Thanks, Phil! I'm thrilled that you like my cooking.
3. This is sweet! (common American phrase) = This tastes sweet!
This phrase is used when a food or drink has a sweet taste to it.
Hiroshi: This cake is too sweet for me!
Marisa: Why? It's not made with much sugar.
Hiroshi: I think it's too sweet for me because the Japanese
have a different sense than the Americans of what
sweet is.
4. This is good! (common American phrase) = This tastes good!
This phrase is the same meaning as "This is tasty!" and is also
used when referring to good-tasting food or drink.
This phrase can also be used when referring to other things
besides food or drink.
Phil: This is good! You're an excellent cook.
Marisa: Thanks, Phil! I'm happy that you like my cooking.
5. This is yummy! (common American phrase)
= This tastes delicious!; This is tasty!; This tastes good!
This phrase is the same meaning as "This is tasty!,
This is delicious!, and This is good!" and is also used when
referring to good-tasting food or drink.
However, it is a child's phrase, not an adult's.
Joe: This is yummy, Mom! You're the best cook in the whole
wide world!
Mom: Thanks, Joe! I'm happy that you like my cooking.

・ポケベル
Pocket Bell は和製英語で英語ではありません。
英語では、beeper.
韓国語では、その音から「ピーピー」だそうです。
中国語では BP机 （ビー・ピー・ジー）とのこと。
とありましたが、私がカナダに留学していたときに担任の
先生にポケベルの事を聞いたところ、 "pagen"（スペルは
確かではありませんが） と言ってました。
辞書をひいたところ、"beeper" or "pager" となってました。
いずれにしても、日本ほどアメリカでは携帯電話は普及し
ていないので、あんまり使う事はないかもしれませんね。。
その先生に、日本では 「ポケベル」 というと言ったら、
"Cute" といって喜んでました。(*^_^*)

ありがとうございました。pager を入れ忘れてました。
pager で思いつくのは 空港やショッピングセンターなどでの
呼び出しですね。
"Paging, Mr. Arima, will you please come to the reception desk."
（お呼び出しします、ありまさん、受け付けまでおいでください）
pager (page + r) もこれと同じ“呼び出す”の意味で使われている
のですね。

★今日の単語から
・I'm thrilled that you like my cooking.
で使われている "thrill" は、「怖さでぞくぞくする」で使われますが、
この文のように「うれしくてわくわくする」にもつかわれます。
・page
アメリカ人の宣教師ご夫妻から英語を習っていた頃、授業の始めに
"Open your textbook to page 38."
(教科書の３８ページを開いてください)
と言うのを聞くたびに、なぜ "Open your textbook at page 80."
と at でないのだろう としっくり来なかったのですが、あるとき
イギリス英語では "at", アメリカ英語では "to" が使われることが
分かりすっきりしました。
