Wall Street pushes higher NEW YORK - Stocks regained their footing Thursday, boosting the Dow Jones industrial average. The Dow made two forays above 9000. The blue-chip barometer closed above that mark for the first time on Monday, but slid 140 points the next two days amid fears that company profits won't justify the market's record-setting climb. ''The market had its grand correction. We were actually down for a couple of days,'' quipped Charles White, portfolio manager at Avatar Associates. Unless the economic backdrop turns bleak, he said, the underlying demand for stocks should continue to prevent any prolonged downturn in the market.

Adding to the day's positive tone was news that Japanese authorities had intervened in the foreign exchange market to prop up the sagging value of the yen, a drop that threatens to derail the fragile recovery of Asia's financial markets. The intervention, endorsed by U.S. officials, came as Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto announced that his country's largest-ever economic stimulus package would include tax cuts.
